Setting The Landing Page

The landing page is the page the human visitor will see if any form of Smacking/Masking is turned on. Search engine spiders will see the content of the WordPress post; human visitors will see the URL set in the landing page

Cookie Stuffing & link-popping

This checkbox is used to stuff a cookie into the visitor’s web browser. Adwords SmackDown uses the landing page URL as the cookie to stuff. This is only applied when you have Smacking/Masking as the selected Smacking/Masking method.

Why do you need this? Some affiliate networks will not properly credit affiliate sales when you use pure Smacking/Masking. The simplest thing to do is to test your offer before rolling out a large traffic campaign. Thanks to the Adwords SmackDown we no longer have these worries!


Smacking/Masking Methods

There are four options for the Smacking/Masking method: Smack, Redirect, Frame and None. When set to “None”, Adwords SmackDown is turned off and the visitor and search engine spiders will always see the contents of the blog post.

When Smacking/Masking method is set to ‘Cloak’ or ‘Redirect’ or ‘Frame’ then spiders see the contents of the blog post but visitors see your landing page. The difference between the methods is in what the URL looks like to the visitor and what the content looks like to the spider.

With Smacking/Masking the URL never changes – just the content of the page changes. Smacking/Masking literally reads the contents of the landing page and instead of displaying the blog post,uses the contents of the landing page.

With redirecting the URL changes to the URL of the landing page. Adwords SmackDown uses a server side 302 (temporary) redirect. In this case, the visitor sees the title bar and the address bar of their browser change.

With framing the URL never changes – just the content of the page changes. The difference is that the blog post contents are still there but they are overlaid with an HTML frame that covers the entire browser and displays the landing page offer. NICE ;-)

Identifying Spiders & UA

The spider identification option lists UA, IP+UA, referrer, and language as the options. When anyone visits your page (human or a search engine spider), information is left behind about who is visiting.

UA identification uses the user agent setting of the web request to check to see if it is Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. spidering the page. UA identification is fast but it is easy to fake. In fact, there are web browser plugins that let you fake your referrer for “testing” purposes.

IP identification uses a list of search engine spiders to match up against. IP detection is generally considered better than UA but has the weakness of only being as good as your IP list. The Adwords SmackDown IP list is the best one publicly available and is the same list used by many high end Masking/Cloaking applications.

Still, this is a war and the search engines are always adding new IPs. With Adwords SmackDown we have added the ability for you to use commercial 3rd party (i.e. paid for) IP lists like the Fantomas Spider-Spy list and our own nocks resources from all over the globe. You can combine UA and IP matching. This is generally the safest but obviously takeslonger.

Referrer and Language Smacking/Masking are completely different ways to recognize certain visitors. With referrer Smacking/Masking you are looking at the HTTP referrer. This is literally where the visitor last came from, making a decision to show the landing page or not. With language Smacking/Masking you are showing a landing page based on the language/country the visitor is from.

We’ll have more to say about referrer and language Smacking/Masking later.

User Agent list

Adwords SmackDown includes a list of common user agents. The string does not need to be complete – just a unique fragment will do. For example, the user agent string ‘goog’ would match the UA ‘googlebot2.3’ but not ‘msnbot/1.2’. Savvy?

The simplest form of Smacking/Masking is to send all your pages on your site to a single landing page. This can be very effective but sometimes you want a little more control. The custom landing page list gives you COMPLETE control. On each line you can supply a pattern and a landing page URL. If the webpage the visitor wants to see matches the pattern, Adwords SmackDown cloaks to the specific landing page provided. For example, let's say you are running a dieting blog and want to promote multiple diet offers. Normally, you send traffic to loosefatnow.com but you decide to send any page with the word 'loosefat' in the URL to iFitness.com and any page with the words 'lose-fat' in it to Warpspeed Fatloss.

To do this you could set up a custom landing page list like this: Again, you don't need the full name of the blog post or page - just a unique pattern. The Do Not Cloak List Some of your blog pages may be presell or offer pages that you don't need to cloak. You can identify them here. Again, you don't need the full URL - just an identifying pattern. Setting the Custom Spider & Exclude options You may come across visitors that you always want to cloak. Just place their IP addresses in the custom spider list. Adwords SmackDown does this automatically for new spiders it finds when check reverse DNS is set. The exclude list works in the opposite way. IP addresses on the exclude list are NEVER Smacked, framed, or redirected. Put these IP addresses in the exclude list.

Setting the Custom Base HREF Option Sometimes you will set the landing page and notice that when you smack/cloak that landing page, the graphic images are looking pretty bananas and OR broken. When this happens, take a deep breath & set the Custom Base HREF option to the URL of the landing page offer.



Using Reverse DNS Lookups

Search engines are always adding new IPs as they grow the number of spiders that they use.The best way to identify if an IP address is from a spider is to look up the actual host name in the internet directory of names. This is called a reverse DNS lookup. It’s a fancy title but it means that if you give the service an IP address, it will tell you where it came from (e.g. Google).

If you have ‘match reverse DNS lookups’ checked then every page request will go to the internet’s database and see if the visitor is a spider. If it is, the IP is added to the custom IP list and the page is cloaked. The downside is speed. Checking the database on every page request is slow. But this is a great way to build up a new list of IPs if you suspect suspicious bot activity. And chances are you will...

Referrer Smacking/Masking

Referrer Smacking/Masking lets you cloak based on where the visitor last came from. For example, with referrer Smacking/Masking you can send visitors that found your page in the Google SERPs to one landing page and visitors that come from Yahoo to another.

Another example usage would be to only cloak visitors that come from search engine searches. This is one way to minimize Google’s manual inspectors and competitors checking if you are Smacking/Masking.

Referrer Smacking/Masking works using the referrer list. This list is a collection of pattern -> URL pairs that Adwords SmackDown will check against If referrer Smacking/Masking is enabled. In this example, we are sending all traffic from the Google SERPs to Quick Fatloss, and the Yahoo SERP traffic to FatlossNow.
